Windows 10 Update Crash

Some Windows 10/11 updates can make your computer crash, but we’re here to help!

You’ve updated your computer or laptop but you are now suffering issues due to the latest update you’ve installed. Many machines receive windows updates which make your system crash causing an error. Some users reported Blue Screen of Death errors and some experienced lost files after installing windows 10 KB4549951.

On April 14th, Microsoft released Windows update KB4549951 and this was supposed to fix a number of security fixes within your system. Some users later discovered that the update was causing errors including the Blue Screen of Death.

iDoctor to the rescue

It’s been reported that the update pushed by Microsoft was far more serious than expected. Many users lost or misplaced files after installing the update. So it is important to back up important information on a USB Drive or some sort of cloud base system such as DropBox or OneDrive.

Deleted files

Some users contacted Windows Support to report that the latest update was a complete failure. “My files were deleted, photos gone, important documents in my drive and all my programs.”

When your computer crashes and a blue screen of death appears, it becomes worrying because the first thing that comes to your mind is are my files secure?

Photos, Documents, Programs and other important files are now at risk of being gone and some of these contain important files you can’t afford to lose. This can be very stressful. So it’s always good to create a backup.

Since many users reported problems after upgrading to KB4549951 that files were moved and or deleted. We always recommend creating a backup just incase of a problem due to an update, but if you do come across an issue come down to our store in naugatuck and we can see what we can do to save your files.

Other users reported that the update created user profiles in their windows 10 boot and resetting settings back to defaults.

This problem was eventually fixed along with many other issues caused by windows updates. If you do run across a problem, always report it to microsoft so they can either help you resolve your problem and so they can push out other updates in the future to prevent other potential problems.

Yet more issues

If file deletion wasn’t terrible enough, KB4549951 brought even more issues for some customers. Many users online have filed complaints with microsoft and online forums regarding the Blue Screen of Death error.

It now appears that the most common Blue Screen of Death error messages are:

  • PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
  • CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED
  • ACPI_BIOS_ERROR
  • INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE
  • MEMORY_MANAGEMENT
  • DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION
  • Portcls.sys

Some users get BSOD so often requiring a PC Reboot and others are getting constant errors where your computer constantly crashes over and over not allowing it to completely boot windows. Making your computer useless. Other users reported that it’s slowing down and making their computer perform very poorly after the update installation. This is certainly a problem. But we have figured out a way around this.

How to fix it

At the moment, the only way to resolve the Blue Screen of Death caused by Windows Update KB4549951 is to uninstall the update during start up. Please note, this update introduced some security fixes so you should only uninstall it if you’re experiencing issues with your computer.

If you installed the update and you are having problems, please follow these steps below or contact us 203-723-1923

Open the Settings app (the cog icon in the Start menu) click ‘Update & security’ and then click on ‘Windows Update’ in the left-hand menu

Next, click ‘View update history’. Click ‘Uninstall updates’, find KB4549951 in the list of updates, select it, then click to uninstall.

How much does it cost to fix my phone?

What’s it cost to fix your screen on your smartphone?

The screen of your cell phone is fragile and could malfunction easily with little impact. Often we drop our devices and the glass outer layer of the internal display and even your digitizer layer will damage causing touch or display issues. If the screen falls hard enough on a corner or just right, it will cause these layers to break. Sometimes your glass doesn’t have to be broken to be considered broken. There’s multiple layers to your screen. The outer glass, and this is the portion your finger touches, then your digitizer, this is what recognizes your finger when you touch the glass and then the display portion, this is the layer that displays the image to you. Displays come in two forms, LCD and Soft OLED. LCD is older technology which is made of a firmer material and Soft OLED is a flexible display panel that observes more impact when dropped.

It’s frustrating when your device falls and black dots, lines and distorted image appear, making your phone useless. This only means that you’ve damaged more than just the glass. Making it difficult to navigate your device when you can’t see your display correctly. If you’re facing this kind of issue, we can certainly help. Here at iDoctor, we specialize in electronics repair. Our team of experts can have your device up and running the same day. We service customers all over the state, Naugatuck, Waterbury, Cheshire, Oxford, Southbury, Prospect, Beacon Falls, Watertown, Woodbridge, Seymour, Derby, Ansonia and many more.

So how much does it cost to replace your phone screen? Well what kind of phone is it? Just like anything else, each model has a different touch panel and labor is going to be different device to device.

Screen Replacement Parts – Aftermarket vs Refurbished

The screen of your phone comes in many different options. Our stores carry 2-4 different types of screen displays to fit your needs.

We always recommend going with our Certified Refurbished Displays because they’re the best available option in the market. These screens come with a Limited Lifetime Warranty against defects.

Our next option is a Premium Plus Soft Oled display. This is the second best option, these could have a warranty ranging between 6-12 months depending on our vendors and these displays have an extremely low defective rate.

Then we have a regular Premium which is a Hard Oled Screen, this option comes with a 90 day limited Warranty, you’re not sacrificing display brightness when compared to the LCD screens that are available and comparing price of a hard oled to a soft oled. You save big!

Then we have our trade in specials which use LCD Touch Panels, This option is great if you are trading in your phone. The color will be slightly different than your OLED Panel, these options come with a shorter warranty and we typically only recommend these if you are trading in your device. Although they are a much cheaper and affordable option, they do come with some sacrifices. The internal display is not flexible like our soft oled therefore, they will break a little easier if dropped or mishandled.

So if you are repairing your phone to be used everyday, we always recommend going with a Soft Oled vs LCD. We understand that not everyone has the budget to get the best screen replacement for your phone and that’s why we offer 3-4 different tiers of screen replacement to suit your needs. We always suggest that you use a case and screen protector to protect your device against accidental drops.

How to change the Screen of a Cell Phone?

Smartphone screen replacement sounds like an easy task until your phone doesn’t turn on when you’re done with the repair. These repairs are very delicate and should only be performed by trained and certified technicians. After replacing your own screen, you will be greeted with a display warning message for some models since the manufacturer does serialize the original screen but this message will not affect the performance of your device. It’s the manufactures way of being able to sell when something has been repaired for their warranty purposes.

How much does it cost to repair a phone screen?

Now that you understand the difference between parts, phones and labor, we will break it down how the rest works. Some repair shops pick the cheapest parts and charge you a high premium for their repairs. As you already know, we let our customer choose between LCD Aftermarket Screen or Soft OLED Refurbished Screens.

Why do different options exist?

Well Phone Part wholesalers figured not everyone could afford the Soft Oleds so they introduced cheaper aftermarket parts to accommodate customers who were on a price budget.

What is the cost difference between an LCD vs OLED?

That’s going to depend on the phone, so let’s pretend we’re talking about an iPhone.

Labor on this device should range between $70-100hr and the LCD display ranges between $40-60 for just the part and the OLED display will range between $90-140.

Making your repair as cheap as $110 and as high as $240. Now every device is different, some are easier having the labor costs be on the lower end, then we have other devices which could take several hours to do where labor is going to increase.

You can get a quote in just minutes by clicking here.

Should I just get a new phone? Isn’t it cheaper?

Well no, it’s not cheaper. A new iPhone 13 Pro Max is well over $1000 and the repair is expensive, but not anywhere near $1000. Are you able to add a new line to your bill to get a phone on promotion? Sure, but you’ll be adding another monthly payment of roughly $35-50 a month plus the cost of the new line which you will be stuck with for 2 years.

Is your computer slowing down?

Slow PC? Try these steps!

What’s wrong with my system?

I’m sure we’ve all experienced a slow computer before. It’s beyond frustrating watching a YouTube video buffer, or having a download or update fail due to a glitch. We don’t always need to upgrade our computers with new RAM or the fastest SSDs off the market, nor do we want to shell out thousands of new systems when ours are fine and just slow. So, what can I do to make my computer faster than a snail?

Checking for malware

The first step any responsible user should take is running a virus scan. Even if you don’t do anything more than watch videos, you’re at risk. Check out our article on cybersecurity and how to protect yourself online if you’re unsure.

Check Task Manager (Windows)

A very quick way to check what is slowing down your Windows PC is to check task manager. Hold CTRL+ALT+DELETE and select task manager. Note this is only for Windows machines. In here, you’re going to hit performance and keep note of what’s at high usage. If something is at 100%- more than likely we have an issue. Your system running at max at all times will most certainly cause crashes and maybe even loss of data. The dreaded BSOD (or Blue Screen of Death) is common on windows machines that are using almost all available resources, so this is a good first step to take.

Remove unwanted programs

For some this may sound as though its common sense, for others they may never have considered it and it should be brought up as a potential cause. If your hard disk, solid state drive, or whatever you download programs to is full or close to full- that is by far the most common cause of computer slowdowns and crashes we’ve seen. For Windows users, hitting the folder icon in the bottom and clicking “This PC” will show all available drives on the system and their storage. You can remove programs by typing “Uninstall” in your search bar and click the programs you want to remove after.

Still slow? Time to get serious.

Fastest way to speed it up if its still slow without upgrading it? 9/10 times doing a Factory Reset will speed up your device as there is less for it to load each time, and it gets rid of junk files building throughout the lifetime of your device. Theoretically, this would make your computer as fast as when you just purchased it from the shelf. This isnt always the case as we’ve gone from different operating softwares over the years, upgrading and adding more and more features will need more processing power. If your device is less than a few years old, there’s almost no reason it should be slow. Let’s get that fixed.

  1. Backup your data to a flash drive or an external drive- only data you want to keep and don’t want to lose.
  2. For Windows, just type Reset into the search bar in the bottom left. Then hit Reset This PC and follow the prompts.
  3. For Macs, the easiest way is told hold CMD + R while the computer is starting to enter recovery mode. From there you can install a new copy of the OS.

After you’ve done that, and if your system is still slow, you can be sure it is a hardware issue and may be time for an upgrade or maybe something inside failed and needs repair- same as if a car wasn’t firing on all cylinders.

Cybersecurity – How to protect yourself from malware and other malicious programs

Cybersecurity – How to protect yourself from malware and other malicious programs

The Basics

Cybersecurity, especially now that all our personal information is held on these devices, is more important than ever before. Our banking information, our passwords, even our identities are attached to these devices now and we need to do everything we can to secure them. We can’t expect our phones, laptops, desktops, nor even gaming consoles to be secure and bulletproof- but there are many steps you can take to protect yourself.

What can happen if I’m compromised?

TL;DR There’s no limit to what can happen if you’re compromised. Your car can even get hacked nowadays.

I’m sure we’ve all had an experience with being hacked or having some of our information leaked- whether it’s a Facebook data leak or even a small mom and pop shop you gave your email to get coupons- there’s no way to be sure who has been compromised. A hacker who gets access to a company’s emails may also use it to extract your email address and passwords you used on their website. That’s just one example, but there are tens of thousands of ways to lose your network security and become yet another victim. Computer and network security should be ingrained in anyone’s mind who has any electronic- have it be an iPhone or a PlayStation- and we should all know the risks.

Adware

Adware is the most common form of attack now. You see it every day, and you’ve probably wondered why you saw that ad for a new bike when you and your friend were just talking about buying one a moment prior. It always seems just too coincidental. Let me share with you the knowledge that YOU and EVERYONE you know has their own advertising IDs linked with their personal information. If you’ve ever made a Facebook account and attached any information about yourself, you can be more than confident that information is being sold off. Our data is the most valuable thing that nearly every company wants to collect from us. It’s used to make specific ads for you so you’re more likely to come across ads relevant to you. It isn’t always a bad thing- but it can certainly turn into worse. Adware is software that maliciously advertises to you- hence the name- and it’s everywhere. From a mobile game off the App Store being riddled with ads to programs that displays ads all over your screen making the device not usable or sluggish, there’s truly near infinite ways adware can infect and affect your system. There’s numerous ways to protect yourself, and in this article we are going to discuss different antivirus and antimalware programs and what you should use for your system.

Spyware

Spyware is by far one of the most frightening and dangerous methods hackers use to obtain information. I’m sure we’ve all heard the stories of your webcam being hacked, worried if the cameras facing you are being watched by someone else, and the terrifying truth it’s more common than most people believe. The most common form of spyware is keyloggers, where malicious users will have access to see everything you’ve ever typed- whether it be bank passwords or your social security number or even messages between friends. This information can be used for anything- from setting up fraudulent accounts to blackmail- and should be taken with the utmost precautions. The Black Hat hackers gather this information from dozens, if not thousands of people at a time and resell it on the black market and deep web. Devices with spyware may even become blacklisted depending on numerous factors, which is a precaution taken by companies to prevent your system from infecting others. This is commonly referred to as a Botnet, where infected user’s computers are used to infect others around them. It could range from sending emails to all your contacts, to laying dormant on your machine while waiting for it to be connected to others. Spyware is also one of the most difficult attacks to remove when they happen, but thankfully it’s easy to prevent.

How can I protect myself?

So, by now you’re probably saying to yourself “ Black Hat hackers? Botnets? Blacklists? I may as well just throw out my device!”

BUT HOLD UP!

There are numerous antivirus programs out there that do their job, and do it well. There’s vpns (Short for Virtual Private Network) to mask your online identity, and make you gain your confidence back when you’re connected.

Malwarebytes

Malwarebytes is an anti-malware program that has web security built right in, and is the program that’s trusted the most. It has a free trial option for 2 weeks which doesn’t require you to purchase to keep using after- a huge plus! There’s tutorials built into the app to guide you on how to scan your system for current infections and how to automatically scan for potentially unwanted programs (or PUPs) and quarantine and remove them from your system.

TunnelBear VPN

TunnelBear VPN is one of the most user-friendly VPN services available today. It takes little to set up, and skews your Internet Protocol (IP) address to make it nearly impossible to track you. A VPN, for example, can make it appear you’re in a different area to those tracking you and looking for a way to enter your system. VPN services only recently started to gain attention and are surely the protection of the future, and the technology is only going to improve.

Conclusion

We only covered a couple programs to use to protect yourself, but there are hundreds more out there that you can research into as well. These are tried and true, and recommended by many to be some of the best ways to protect yourself. You don’t need to be afraid of using the internet or shopping online- just stay weary and stay away from things you don’t trust. If anything doesn’t seem right with your system it is certainly worth taking the steps to research and resolve your issues. It’s more important than ever to protect your virtual footprint and to cover your tracks so that you’re not followed and watched. If you remember there’s people looking for what you’re putting online, you can remember how to protect yourself and stay safe.

My Phone won’t charge, why?

My phone won’t charge – Broken Charging Port?

Phones have gotten so advanced since the iPhone 3GS era. Technology hasn’t stopped within our electronic realm and as you know, it’s accelerated so much that these hand held devices in our pockets control our lives. So we understand how important it is that your device remains working properly. Charging Ports have many reasons why they fail to operate correctly.

My phone is plugged in, but nothing happens. What now?

First thing you should do is make sure your port is free of dirt. Many times the inside of your port is filled with pocket lint or dust causing blockage within your port making your usb lightning cable not make connection to charge your phone. Keeping the inside of your port clean will prolong the health of the device. If you continue to force your cable into your port while it’s filled with lint, you will damage the port and you will need to get it repaired.

My port is cleaned, but my phone still does nothing.

Your port is clean but it doesn’t charge? Ok, perhaps you should try a new cable. If your new cable doesn’t work there could be something internal going on with your device. Many times the cheap cables you get at convenience stores will ruin your phones charging ic chip causing a major malfunction. It’s extremely important that you always use the original cable that came with your phone to ensure your device remains working properly.

My phone is charging very slow and my battery dies fast.

Sounds like your device’s battery has worn down. Go over to your settings and click “battery” to check your battery capacity. If the capacity is less than 79% a warning message will trigger indicating that you service your device before the phone becomes unusable.

After you’ve replaced the battery on your phone, your capacity will now be 100% or – –

Some devices’ battery health will become unavailable after servicing it due to the fact that your manufacturer serializes parts to your device which disables certain features when your device is repaired. Warning messages does not affect the function of your device.
